Police deny shielding political thugs in Osun, say arrests are evidence-based

The Osun State Police Command has rejected allegations by the state chapter of the Accord Party that it has been providing protection for any individual, group or political party, insisting that its operations are intelligence-driven and evidence-based.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the command said it remains a non-partisan institution committed to protecting lives and property without fear or favour, stressing that it has never shielded any individual, group or political party.
“It is important to state that security operations are intelligence-driven and evidence-based. Arrests are not carried out on the basis of media reports, political statements, social media allegations or public sentiment, but on credible evidence capable of sustaining lawful prosecution,” the statement said.
Ojelabi said the command had consistently responded to security threats across the state, with several suspects arrested, investigated and charged to court where sufficient evidence existed, while investigations into other reported incidents were still ongoing.
He also dismissed allegations of selective arrests, insisting that every suspect was apprehended based on reasonable suspicion of involvement in criminal acts and in line with the law.
According to him, some of the arrested suspects confessed to plans to procure arms and ammunition to perpetrate further violence, adding that political affiliation or union membership does not confer immunity from investigation or prosecution.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, while urging political parties, community leaders and residents to avoid inflammatory statements and support security agencies with credible information to prevent crime and ensure offenders are brought to justice.
