NELFUND disburses June, July upkeep allowances to students in North-East institutions

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has commenced the payment of June and July upkeep allowances to beneficiaries in several tertiary institutions across Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, with most eligible students receiving N40,000 covering the two months.

The payments, made under the Federal Government’s student loan scheme, are separate from the tuition fees paid directly by NELFUND to participating institutions.

The institutions where beneficiaries have received the allowances include Yobe State University, Federal College of Education, Potiskum, Kashim Ibrahim University and Federal Polytechnic, Mubi.

Confirming the payments on Tuesday, Dean of Student Affairs at Yobe State University, Sani Isa, said students who had yet to receive their upkeep allowances made errors during the online registration process.

“They did not press the upkeep button during registration, and that is why they are only enjoying payment of the school fees component,” he said in a report by the News Agency of Nigeria.

Isa added that the university had intensified sensitisation campaigns to help students complete their applications correctly.

A History student at the university, Mohammed Sani, commended the Federal Government for introducing the scheme, saying it had eased the financial burden on students.

“The scheme has greatly supported students in transportation and feeding,” he said.
