Makinde warns Oyo monarchs against partisan politics

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, has cautioned traditional rulers across the state against engaging in partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that monarchs who openly participate in political activities risk being treated as politicians.
Makinde gave the warning on Saturday while speaking at the newly commissioned palace of the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adebayo Adegbola Ajobo Olurin I, during the monarch’s first coronation anniversary and the conferment of the honorary chieftaincy title of Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland.
The governor urged traditional rulers to remain neutral and concentrate on their traditional responsibilities, particularly the preservation of peace, unity and development in their respective domains. He said monarchs should serve as fathers to all residents and political actors, irrespective of their political affiliations.
Makinde said the traditional institution occupied a sensitive position in society and should not be dragged into partisan political contests.
He stated, “If you want to play politics, then you should be ready to be treated as a politician. But if you want to remain a traditional ruler, then stay away from politics.”
The governor maintained that his administration had continued to respect the traditional institution and would sustain its support for monarchs across the state. He, however, stressed that such support should not be interpreted as an invitation for traditional rulers to become partisan actors in the political process.
The presidential candidate also called for issue-based campaigns devoid of character assassination and political blackmail, urging candidates to focus on selling their programmes, policies and agenda to the people. He further urged traditional rulers to continue promoting peaceful coexistence and initiatives capable of improving the welfare of their subjects.
The event in Eruwa was attended by traditional rulers, political leaders, government officials and other dignitaries who gathered to mark the Eleruwa’s first year on the throne. Makinde used the occasion to appeal to stakeholders to place the interests of Oyo State above partisan considerations as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
