Sanwo-Olu urges stockbrokers to deepen capital market participation

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) to deepen capital market participation, promote financial literacy and strengthen professional capacity to boost investment in Nigeria.
Sanwo-Olu made the call on Friday when he received the principal officers of the institute, led by its President and Chairman of Council, Fiona Ahimie, during a courtesy visit to Lagos House, Ikeja.
The governor commended stockbrokers and investors for their contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s capital market, noting that more efforts were needed to expand public awareness and encourage broader participation.
He said many Nigerians remained unfamiliar with investment opportunities beyond meeting their daily financial needs, stressing the importance of educating the public on savings, investment and wealth creation. He also pledged his administration’s support for initiatives aimed at improving financial literacy and developing professionals in the sector.
Sanwo-Olu congratulated Ahimie on her emergence as the institute’s first female president, describing her appointment as a significant milestone. He urged the new council to sustain the institute’s achievements while promoting professionalism, public engagement and capacity development.
Earlier, Ahimie said the institute’s annual conference, scheduled for November 4 and 5 in Lagos, would provide a platform to discuss the development of Nigeria’s capital market, financial literacy and strategies for increasing investment participation.
She disclosed that the institute was collaborating with the Office of the Vice President on a programme to train 10 million Nigerians in financial literacy and capital market participation, with particular attention to encouraging young people to understand investment opportunities.
Ahimie also revealed that the institute was working towards establishing a five billion naira endowment fund to support professional training and capacity development. She added that collaboration between the institute and the Lagos State Government could further advance investment awareness, professional development and economic growth.
