McPherson DSA urges fresh students to embrace discipline, seek support

The Acting Dean of Student Affairs at McPherson University, Dr. Kayode Olumurewa, has urged fresh students to take responsibility for their academic success, personal growth and conduct as they begin their university education.

Olumurewa gave the advice during the university’s 2026/2027 orientation programme at the Stephen and Hannah Obaro Multipurpose Hall in Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State, where he welcomed the new students and encouraged them to make the most of their time on campus.

He reminded the students that university life offers greater independence but also demands maturity, discipline and accountability, urging them to remain punctual, diligent and mindful of the decisions they make.

Beyond academic performance, the acting dean encouraged the students to develop good character, make responsible choices and avoid behaviours that could jeopardise their education or future aspirations.

To ensure they do not face challenges alone, Olumurewa assured the fresh students of the support available through the Directorate of Student Affairs, Chaplaincy, Counselling Unit and Health Centre.

He urged them to approach the relevant university units whenever they encounter academic, emotional, health-related or personal difficulties, stressing the importance of seeking help when necessary.

Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor Professor Francis Adegbaye Igbasan warned the students against examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, bullying and other forms of indiscipline, noting that violations of university rules could attract sanctions, including suspension and expulsion.

The orientation also featured presentations by university officials on the institution’s history, values, financial procedures, library resources, academic affairs, sports, spiritual development and campus security to help the students settle in, understand their responsibilities and make informed decisions throughout their stay.
