Obi mismanaged political goodwill from 2023, Abure says

Julius Abure, immediate past national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has ruled out supporting Peter Obi’s presidential ambition in 2027, accusing the former Anambra governor of squandering the political goodwill and support he enjoyed ahead of the 2023 general election.
Abure said his political camp would not support the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where Obi is expected to pursue his presidential ambition, adding that his group was considering other political parties and candidates ahead of the next general election.
Speaking in an interview with Punch on Sunday, Abure predicted that Obi would not replicate his 2023 electoral performance, alleging that he had mismanaged the political capital, human resources and goodwill that propelled his previous campaign.
“Let me say clearly that Obi will not record the successes he recorded in the 2023 general election. That is because he has squandered his goodwill, human capital, resources, and mismanaged all the gains he had in 2023,” he said.
The former LP chairman, however, said his camp had yet to enter negotiations with any presidential aspirant, stressing that its eventual political alignment would depend on shared interests, ideology and the acceptability of the candidate.
He also linked the decision to the pending Supreme Court case involving his faction and the current leadership of the Labour Party.
Abure said if the apex court failed to deliver judgment before the end of November, he would consult his supporters and consider offers from politicians seeking their backing.
“As for me, we are waiting for the Supreme Court to decide our case, and if the judgment is not coming before the end of this November, we will rationalise the offer of whoever wants our support,” he said.
