Tinubu congratulates Flamingos after historic U-17 World Cup victory

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, after they became the first African side to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The Flamingos defeated Japan 2-1 in Saturday’s final in Rabat, Morocco, to claim their maiden title and make history for African women’s football.

Tinubu, who received the news shortly after returning to Abuja from campaign engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, described the victory as a proud moment for Nigeria.

“What wonderful news to return home to! Our young girls have conquered the world and given Nigerians everywhere another reason to celebrate our great country,” he said.

The President praised the players for their courage, discipline and determination, saying they had fulfilled their promise to win the trophy after defeating their opponents in the semi-final.

He said the victory would inspire millions of young Nigerian girls to pursue their ambitions in sports and other fields.

Tinubu particularly commended Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku, whose goals secured the historic victory, as well as the entire squad for their teamwork.

He also congratulated the coaching crew, the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Sports Commission for their contributions to the team’s success.
