Aisha Yesufu drops out of FCT senate race

Human rights activist and political advocate, Aisha Yesufu, has stepped down from the race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general election.

Yesufu, a prominent supporter of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi during the 2023 elections, announced her withdrawal on Friday after revealing that her party, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), would not hold primaries for the FCT senate position.

The activist had declared her intention to contest the seat in May shortly after joining the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing her political experience and commitment to public service.

Her withdrawal follows growing speculation within political circles that the party had settled for another aspirant, Amanda Pam, for the senatorial ticket.

Confirming the development, Yesufu disclosed that the party would only conduct primaries for House of Representatives positions in the FCT.

Despite ending her senate ambition, she urged her supporters to remain focused on broader national political goals, particularly the 2027 presidential election.

She thanked members of her campaign team and supporters for their commitment to the “Aisha for Senate” project, describing their backing as encouraging and inspiring.

Yesufu also said she would continue political engagement across the six area councils of the FCT, adding that she plans to meet residents again in the coming weeks to appreciate their support and discuss issues affecting the territory.
