Residents of Zone 6, Federal Housing Estate in Shagari area of Akure, Ondo State, were thrown into utter confusion after a newborn baby was found abandoned at the entrance of their community.
The baby, whose identity could not be traced, was reportedly discovered at the community gate around 9:35 p.m. on Thursday.
Upon discovery, residents of the community were quickly alerted through the estate’s WhatsApp group for further identification.
While speaking to Western Post, a male resident and executive member of the Federal Housing Estate Association, who spoke on a condition of anonymity, said the child might have been deliberately left near the gate so that operators of a nearby orphanage could notice and rescue the baby.
According to him, this is an isolated case in their community, however, similar stories have been heard in various parts of the country.
Western Post later gathered that indeed one Tayo Ojueromi runs an orphanage within the community.
Responding to the incident via the community’s WhatsApp group, Ojueromi assured residents that the situation had been brought under control, adding that an initial medical check suggested the baby might have a deformity and some health complications, noting that further medical examination would be carried out at a standard healthcare facility.
