The Ekiti State Police Command has confirmed the death of three persons, including two students and a hotel staff member, which occurred during the late-night party of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology students at a hotel on Sunday in Ikere-Ekiti.
Western Post reported yesterday that the incident occurred during a gathering organised by students of the institution following their convocation ceremony.
Confirming the situation, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the incident happened around 1am.
He explained that two students and a hotel staff member lost their lives in the chaos that ensued at the venue.
According to him, the celebration turned violent after a disagreement between two students escalated into a fight.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that after their convocation on April 18, the students proceeded to the hotel for a party,” he said.
“During the event which extended into the early hours, an argument between two students led to a fight, causing others to flee, resulting in a stampede that claimed three lives,” he added.
Abutu said the Commissioner of Police, Micheal Falade, has ordered a thorough investigation, while urging calm and assuring that the circumstances surrounding the incident would be unravelled.
