Ekiti police threaten penalties for traffic offenders amid motorcycle accidents

The Ekiti State Police Command has warned commercial motorcyclists and other riders against reckless driving and violation of traffic regulations, following a reported rise in motorcycle-related accidents across the state.
The command said the development was largely linked to dangerous driving practices, including excessive speed, reckless overtaking and failure to obey traffic lights and road signs.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Michael Falade, consequently directed personnel attached to traffic enforcement to intensify patrols and ensure strict compliance with road safety regulations.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu.
In the statement, the police warned that riders caught flouting traffic rules would face prosecution, stressing that such violations could have serious consequences for other road users.
The statement quoted the command as saying, “The command has observed with concern the increasing rate of motorcycle-related accidents across the state, particularly those arising from the flagrant disregard for traffic rules and regulations by some motorcycle riders.”
The police also urged passengers to discourage reckless riding by refusing to board motorcycles operated in a dangerous manner and reporting incidents where necessary.
The command further appealed to motorists, motorcyclists and pedestrians to exercise patience and discipline on the roads, stressing that collective adherence to traffic regulations was essential to preventing avoidable crashes and saving lives.
