Makinde orders roadside traders to relocate, vows zero tolerance for street trading

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has directed roadside traders operating around Agodi-Gate in Ibadan to immediately vacate the area and relocate to the newly constructed shops and stalls provided by the Ibadan North East Local Government Area.

Makinde gave the directive on Friday while speaking at the commissioning of the newly constructed facility, stressing that his administration has zero tolerance for street trading across the state.

The governor said the affected traders had been properly documented and would be allocated spaces at the facility free of charge, urging them to make proper use of the new shops.

Makinde also advised the traders to report anyone who attempts to demand money from them in exchange for the allocated shops, insisting that the facilities were provided for them at no cost.

He said his administration was committed to reducing the dangers associated with roadside trading, particularly the risks it poses to pedestrians, motorists and the traders themselves.

Makinde explained that the government had chosen to provide alternative trading spaces before enforcing restrictions on roadside trading because many traders depend on their daily earnings to support their families and educate their children.

He urged the affected traders to move away from the roadside and relocate to the new facility, assuring them that the government’s decision was aimed at easing their burden while creating a safer and more organised environment for their businesses.

The governor said, “And as for the traders who sell their wares on the roadside, your names have been properly documented and the shops will be given to you free of charge. Report anyone who tries to collect money from you. Move away from the road and enter the park.”
