Elder Abuse Awareness Day: Oluremi Tinubu calls for stronger protection of senior citizens
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, has called for increased efforts to protect the dignity, rights, safety and wellbeing of elderly citizens, urging stakeholders to move beyond awareness campaigns and implement practical measures to prevent elder abuse.
In a message marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026, observed on Monday, the First Lady highlighted the need for stronger systems of care, community support and social protection for senior citizens.
The global observance this year is themed, “Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work.”
Oluremi Tinubu noted that while older persons deserve respect, protection and proper care, many continue to experience physical, emotional, financial and psychological abuse.
She stressed that as populations continue to age and age-related challenges become more pronounced, governments, communities and families must work together to ensure that older people are not left vulnerable or abandoned.
The First Lady also reminded younger generations of the importance of supporting the elderly, noting that today’s youth will become the senior citizens of tomorrow.
She urged Nigerians to continue honouring and caring for elderly citizens whose wisdom, sacrifices and contributions have played a significant role in shaping society.
Oluremi Tinubu further called for renewed commitment to safeguarding their welfare and rights.
