Enugu security operatives capture six gunmen, recover grenades, AK-47s

Security agencies in Enugu State have arrested six suspected criminals on the state’s security watch list and recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition during joint operations across the state.

Governor Peter Mbah disclosed this on Friday while inspecting the recovered weapons at the Enugu State headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS). He said the suspects were linked to several violent crimes and security breaches recorded in the state.

Items recovered from the operations include 17 AK-47 rifles, one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), one rocket-propelled rifle, one tear-gas gun, 12 AK-47 magazines, two hand-held grenades, three tear-gas canisters, and 1,071 rounds of ammunition comprising 323 special rounds, 270 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and 478 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. Security operatives also recovered various uniforms and four lanyards.

Speaking during the inspection, Mbah commended security agencies for their dedication and professionalism, describing the arrests as a major breakthrough in the state’s fight against crime. He recalled the December 2025 attack that claimed the lives of security personnel and noted that some of the suspects arrested had been on the run since then.

“We have always said in Enugu State that we have no room for criminals. And if you commit crime here, no matter how long it takes, we must identify you, we must get you, and we must ensure that you are brought to justice. We are happy that officers who paid the ultimate price, their sacrifices have not been in vain because we are bringing to a close that chapter, where we now believe that these people will face justice,” the governor said.

Mbah added that the success of the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of the state’s investment in modern security infrastructure and technology, as well as the commitment of security personnel. He assured residents that the government would continue to strengthen security measures to protect lives and property.

The governor also warned criminal elements operating within the state to either leave or face the full weight of the law, stressing that security agencies would continue to track and dismantle criminal networks. He further urged landlords and property owners to conduct proper background checks on prospective tenants, warning that the government would continue to prosecute erring landlords and demolish properties linked to violent crimes.

Mbah also commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting efforts to strengthen security across the country through the rehabilitation of security training institutions and backing the establishment of state police. He noted that the recent passage of the State Police Bill by the House of Representatives would enhance security management and enable states to take greater responsibility for safeguarding their territories.
