FG, Enugu move to launch direct cargo flights to China by December

The Federal Government and the Enugu State Government are working to commence direct cargo flight operations between Enugu and Guangzhou, China, before the end of 2026, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has disclosed.

Keyamo made this known in Lagos on Thursday during the launch of newly acquired aircraft by United Air, describing the initiative as part of efforts to transform Enugu into a major logistics and cargo hub for the Southeast.

He said the Federal Government had already restructured the management of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, placing it under a privately managed operational framework to maximise its economic potential.

According to the minister, Governor Peter Mbah secured President Bola Tinubu’s approval to attract private investors to manage the airport and improve its efficiency.

“As I speak with you, Enugu is now fully privately managed and fully supported by the state government, with the clear objective of turning it into a dedicated cargo hub for the entire Southeast,” Keyamo said.

He disclosed that high-level negotiations were ongoing to secure direct cargo flights from Guangzhou to Enugu, with the maiden operation targeted for December.

“Just two days ago, the Enugu governor and I were actively negotiating the first direct cargo flight from Guangzhou, China, straight into Enugu. We are targeting December for the maiden flight,” he said.

Keyamo noted that the service would enable Southeast traders to consolidate goods in China and receive them directly in Enugu for distribution to commercial centres such as Onitsha and Aba. He added that the initiative complements Enugu Air, launched in 2025, which has expanded its fleet from three to six aircraft and is preparing to begin regional operations.
