Florence Ajimobi appointed Nigeria’s governor on IAEA board
Nigeria’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Austria and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr Florence Ajimobi, has been appointed the country’s governor on the IAEA Board of Governors for 2026–2028.
Her appointment followed Nigeria’s election to the 35-member IAEA Board of Governors during the 70th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna.
A statement issued by her media office in Ibadan on Saturday said the appointment places Ajimobi at the centre of Nigeria’s engagement with the agency’s policy-making organ.
As governor, she will participate in deliberations on the IAEA’s programmes, nuclear safety and security, safeguards, peaceful applications of nuclear technology and international cooperation.
The statement said Ajimobi would articulate and advance Nigeria’s positions at board meetings while contributing to discussions on the policy direction and activities of the agency.
It added that the election and appointment would strengthen Nigeria’s engagement with the IAEA and reaffirm its commitment to the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology.
According to the statement, the position would also provide an enhanced platform for international cooperation in healthcare, agriculture, food security, water-resource management and human-capacity development.
Ajimobi, who is also Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Austria and Permanent Representative to other international organisations in Vienna, is the wife of the late former Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who governed the state from 2011 to 2019.
