Glasgow 2026: Nigeria’s Nwachukwu sets new world record, wins gold

Team Nigeria’s campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games hit another milestone on Wednesday as Goodness Nwachukwu broke the world record to win gold in the Women’s Discus Throw F42-44/F61-64 event.

The Nigerian para-athlete threw 39.66 metres at Scotstoun Stadium, with the scoreboard confirming a new world record.

Competing under the para-athletics points system, Nwachukwu scored 1,130 points to take gold ahead of Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye (38.52m, 931 points) and Bree Cronin (36.00m, 861 points).

Nigeria’s Destiny Agbo also impressed with a personal best of 33.79 metres, finishing fifth with 787 points.

The win further strengthens Nwachukwu’s status as a top para discus thrower. She previously set a world record and won Commonwealth gold in Birmingham 2022, and has now extended her mark to 39.66 metres.

Her victory delivered Team Nigeria’s seventh gold medal at Glasgow 2026, with more events still to come.
