Great-grandfather, medical doctor busted as NDLEA intensifies war on hard drugs
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intensified nationwide crackdowns on drug cartels, arresting a 93-year-old great-grandfather and a 69-year-old medical doctor among several suspects in coordinated intelligence-led operations.
The nonagenarian, identified as Friday Ahukanna Chigbu, was apprehended at his residence in Abia State where 7.7 kilograms of skunk were recovered, with the suspect admitting to long-term use before venturing into drug trafficking.
Similarly, efforts to dismantle an international syndicate led to the arrest of Ivorian national Gohouri Michael at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport with cocaine, prompting further investigation.
Subsequently, authorities tracked and arrested Chudi Daniel Ofomata in Ogun State for allegedly orchestrating the cocaine movement, with additional controlled substances recovered from him.
In another development, NDLEA operatives arrested multiple suspects across Ogun and Imo states, including Azeez Sanni, Olayinka Oke, Adekunle Adeyemi, and Ayoka Akinwale, with significant quantities of skunk seized during separate raids.
Likewise, a couple, Abdullahi Umar and his wife Adama Umar, were apprehended in Niger State after operatives discovered 118 kilograms of skunk hidden in their home.
According to reports, major seizures were equally recorded in Borno, Lagos, and Abuja, where officers intercepted trucks and vehicles conveying large consignments of illicit drugs, including codeine syrup, Rohypnol tablets, and cannabis, leading to several arrests.
Reacting to the development, the NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa commended officers across multiple state commands for the successful operations while reiterating the agency’s commitment to balancing drug supply reduction with ongoing public sensitization campaigns.
