Gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the forthcoming Edo State governorship election, Olumide Akpata, has clarified a recent controversy surrounding a statement he made while visiting the Oba of Benin.

He made the correction in a statement made public on Monday, stating that the narrative being put out in the media and public domain was blown out of proportion.

On Saturday, June 15, 2024, the Labour Party held its flag-off ceremony for the Edo State gubernatorial elections.

The event was marked by a notable highlight: the warm reception of Labour Party candidate Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata in the company of Mr. Peter Obi and other dignitaries, by His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin.

During his speech to His Royal Majesty, Akpata admitted that he mistakenly referred to himself as a “son of the palace,” potentially implying a false claim of royal birth. The Oba of Benin promptly corrected him, suggesting the term “an indigenous illustrious son of the soil” instead. The Oba also highlighted various occasions where he had supported Akpata as a true son of Benin.

Akpata, showing respect and humility, accepted the correction and rephrased his statement, emphasizing his deep reverence for the Oba’s throne and his willingness to learn and accept guidance.

Addressing the controversy, he expressed dismay over recent attempts by certain individuals to twist the Oba’s words and create unnecessary tension.

Further condemning any actions or language disrespecting the Oba, he reiterated that any attack on the Oba is an attack on him as well.

Akpata called for an immediate end to the misrepresentation of his exchange with the Oba, urging all parties to respect the Oba’s words and to avoid distorting them for personal gain, as such actions undermine the cultural reverence for the throne.

As the 2024 Edo State Elections approach, Akpata reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the values and traditions of the Benin Kingdom.

He called on the people of Edo State to reject any attempts to disrespect their revered monarch and to unite in building a prosperous future for the state, guided by the wisdom and blessings of His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin.
