Man petitions police over alleged unpaid vehicle deal involving Ondo lawmaker

A car dealer in Akure, Ondo State, Mr Jimoh Tairu, has petitioned the police and the Ondo State House of Assembly over an alleged unpaid vehicle transaction involving a member of the assembly representing Ilaje Constituency II, Olawumi Fayemi-Obayelu.
The dealer, through his lawyer, also urged the assistant inspector-general of police, Zone 17, Akure, and the speaker of the assembly to intervene by compelling the lawmaker to either pay for or return a Toyota Venza allegedly obtained from him several months ago.
According to a petition dated July 6, 2026, the dealer claimed that the lawmaker took delivery of the vehicle after promising to pay later, but had allegedly failed to fulfil the agreement. The petition further alleged offences bordering on obtaining property under false pretences and threat to life.
The petitioner stated that Fayemi-Obayelu had approached him after indicating plans to dispose of her personal vehicle while expressing interest in purchasing the Toyota Venza from his dealership.
He further alleged that he accepted her vehicle for resale and subsequently invited a mechanic to inspect it, during which an engine gasket defect was allegedly discovered.
According to the petition, when the issue was brought to the lawmaker’s attention, she allegedly advised the dealer to repair the fault at his own expense. The complainant thereafter called on the police to investigate the matter and ensure justice was served.
Tairu said, “The female lawmaker should be asked to return my vehicle instead of blackmailing the speaker. She should be asked to return my car to me. Is it because she is a lawmaker that is why she is behaving like that?”
As of the time of filing this report, the allegations had not been proven in any court, while there was no indication that the police had concluded their investigation. Efforts to obtain Fayemi-Obayelu’s reaction were unsuccessful, and her response was not available before publication.
