NDLEA boss warns youths against drug abuse in UniAbuja convocation

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mohamed Buba Marwa, has warned Nigerian youths against the dangers of drug abuse during a lecture at the University of Abuja.

Speaking at the institution’s 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremony in Abuja, Marwa stressed that the temporary pleasure derived from drugs often comes with long-term and devastating consequences.

He explained that drug abuse is no longer limited to the streets but has become a serious issue within campuses, affecting students’ academic performance and future prospects.

Furthermore, he noted that the drug scene has evolved from the use of traditional substances to more dangerous synthetic drugs, with social media now playing a role in their distribution.

Marwa also warned that involvement in drug-related offences could permanently damage careers, as convictions may prevent individuals from practicing professions such as law, medicine, and engineering.

In addition, he highlighted that drug abuse contributes to issues such as poor memory, loss of critical thinking, campus violence, and even premature death among young people.

Addressing graduating students, he urged them to remain focused and avoid peer pressure, noting that Nigeria needs their talent, energy, and clear thinking to drive future development.

He concluded by calling on stakeholders, including academic institutions and families, to intensify efforts in combating drug abuse while commending the University of Abuja for supporting initiatives aimed at curbing the menace.
