New Medical University Bill scales through Lagos Assembly, awaits Sanwo-Olu’s assent

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have passed the University of Medicine and Health Sciences Bill into law.

The lawmakers unanimously adopted the committee report on Thursday after a thorough review of its provisions and extensive feedback from stakeholders during a public hearing.

The establishment of the new university is expected to help address the shortage of medical professionals, expand training opportunities, and strengthen indigenous medical research capacity in Lagos State.

It is also projected to enhance the quality and resilience of healthcare delivery across the country.

In addition, the institution is anticipated to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s healthcare sector by improving local research output and supporting the development of a skilled medical workforce.

The bill will now be transmitted to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for assent.
