Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, has revealed that negotiations with a prospective title sponsor are at an advanced stage, with the official unveiling expected before the league’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on August 7 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Elegbeleye disclosed this during an interview at the Maldron Hotel in Glasgow, Scotland, where he said discussions had reached the final stage following meetings held abroad.

“We are finalising the details. I have travelled abroad to conclude discussions and ensure everything is properly put in place,” he said.

He added that the partnership would go beyond title sponsorship by boosting the NPFL’s digital presence through influencer collaborations and strategic content creation.

As part of efforts to reposition the league, the former Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports said the NPFL had also engaged leading Nigerian entertainers, who have agreed in principle to support the league’s fan engagement campaign.

Elegbeleye, a former Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), also announced plans to establish a dedicated social media department comprising experienced sports journalists, digital content creators and young media professionals to enhance the league’s online visibility.

He further reaffirmed the NPFL’s commitment to maintaining the August-to-May football calendar, describing it as a key indicator of the league’s growing professionalism and alignment with global football standards.

According to available information, the proposed title sponsorship deal is valued at over $7.5 million for an initial three-year period, making it one of the biggest commercial partnerships in the history of the Nigerian top-flight league.
