First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called for greater efforts to eliminate period poverty and menstrual stigma in Nigeria, saying every girl deserves to live with dignity and without barriers to education and well-being.

In a statement marking International Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, 2025, the First Lady emphasized that the occasion is a powerful reminder of the nation’s responsibility to its girls and young women.

“We can do more to eliminate period poverty and stigma to enable every girl live with dignity,” Mrs. Tinubu said. “Menstruation must not limit a girl’s access to education, health, and equal opportunities.”

Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” she highlighted the importance of early education about menstruation, along with access to clean water, sanitary pads, and proper hygiene facilities.

She urged families, communities, and institutions to ensure that girls do not miss school or other opportunities due to menstruation.

“Let us ensure that our girls have access to clean water, sanitary pads, and proper hygiene practices,” she said.
