Oluremi Tinubu donates N2bn to revive Akwete textile production in Abia

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, has announced a N2 billion donation to support the revitalisation of the historic Akwete handwoven textile industry in Abia State, describing the fabric as an important part of the country’s cultural heritage that must be preserved for future generations.

Speaking during a visit to Akwete, the traditional home of the renowned handwoven fabric on Tuesday, the First Lady said Nigeria must protect its indigenous crafts while encouraging young people to embrace local culture and traditional attire.

She noted that the centuries-old weaving tradition had been sustained through generations of women and urged that the practice be preserved and expanded.

“Our young people need to be encouraged to embrace our traditions and cultural outfits,” she said, adding that she proudly wears African clothing wherever she travels because it reflects her identity and heritage.

Tinubu described Akwete weaving as “a sacred craft” requiring patience, dedication and endurance, saying the skills should not be allowed to disappear.

She also pledged support for improving infrastructure at the production site, saying the existing facilities could be developed into a centre that tells the story of the famous textile.

Addressing the artisans, the first lady said she had “heard their cry” and called on prominent Igbo leaders and Nigerians to promote Akwete fabric beyond the country’s borders.

“As far as I am concerned, the Igbo should take Akwete to the nations. Rise up and preserve this heritage,” she said.
