Ondo grants licenses to two firms in ongoing power improvement efforts

The Ondo State Government has issued power generation and distribution licenses to Ore Power Limited and ASB Valiant Electricity Limited in a move aimed at improving electricity supply across the state.
The licences were granted through the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau under the Ondo State Electricity Law, 2020, at a ceremony held in Akure.
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Johnson Alabi, in his remarks, applauded Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for what he described as bold leadership in repositioning the state’s electricity sector.
Alabi said the present administration remained focused on establishing a viable, independent and investor-friendly electricity market capable of meeting the energy needs of residents and businesses.
He also commended the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu for reforms in the power sector, particularly the Electricity Act, which he noted had empowered states to play more active roles in electricity generation and distribution.
According to him, the licensing of the firms is part of deliberate efforts to guarantee steady power supply, noting that electricity remains a key driver of economic growth and industrial development.
He disclosed that the state government had introduced several initiatives, including subsidised metering to ensure transparency in billing, the creation of special electricity courts to handle disputes, and plans for a statewide power grid covering the three senatorial districts, adding that the government had also taken steps to assume control of some power assets for commercial operations while working towards a regulated electricity market within the state.
Speaking earlier, the State Coordinator of the regulatory bureau, Stephen Bolawole, stressed that Ore Power Limited would generate up to 100 megawatts of electricity to improve supply, particularly in the Ore axis, while ASB Valiant Electricity Limited would construct an 18-kilometre Omotoso–Ore 33KV line to enhance distribution. He noted that the licences were backed by legal provisions and urged the companies to adhere strictly to regulatory requirements and performance standards.
