Oriyomi denies having ties with Gumi, condemns religious violence

Popular Oyo-based broadcaster and philanthropist, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, has denied allegations linking him to Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, describing the claims as false, defamatory and entirely without basis.

The founder of Agidigbo FM said he has never had any relationship with the controversial cleric and is considering legal action against those spreading the allegations.

Hamzat made the clarification while reacting to claims circulating in some quarters that he was associated with Gumi. He said he was compelled to respond publicly in order to protect his reputation and that of his family from what he described as a deliberate campaign of misinformation.

“I have never seen Gumi in my life. I am one of those who criticise him whenever he speaks. It is time to speak up for the sake of my children, and I will take legal action,” Hamzat said.

The broadcaster explained that he had consistently criticised Gumi over his comments on insecurity and banditry in Nigeria. According to him, he publicly questioned reports of the cleric’s visit to the University of Ibadan and also faulted the Federal Government for allowing him to move freely despite the controversies surrounding some of his statements.

Hamzat said he was therefore shocked by allegations that he invited Gumi to Ibadan, insisting that he had no connection whatsoever with the cleric. He also lamented the other accusations levelled against him while dismissing claims that he supports or intends to enforce Sharia law, maintaining that he respects religious freedom and has never attempted to impose his faith on anyone.

Highlighting his commitment to religious tolerance, Hamzat said children under his care attend church services, while his workforce comprises both Christians and Muslims. He added that his humanitarian and philanthropic activities are guided by the principles of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

Highlighting some of his philanthropic contributions, the broadcaster said he has sponsored pilgrims to both Jerusalem and Mecca, a gesture he said reflects his respect for different faiths. “I have never met Gumi in my life. I am not against any religion, and I will never force anyone to accept my religion,” he stated.
