Osun APC seeks engineering bodies’ intervention over alleged flyover failure

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for the intervention of professional engineering bodies following what it described as the structural failure of the Lameco Junction Flyover in Osogbo.

The party called on the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE) and the Association for Consulting Engineering in Nigeria (ACEN) to investigate the flyover and other infrastructure projects executed by the state government.

In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the APC claimed the incident had vindicated its earlier criticism that the flyover project was awarded to an unqualified engineer.

“When the APC, as the opposition party, ceaselessly raised the alarm over the professional anomalies and inadequacies in the projects, some people thought we were playing dirty politics. Now, we have been vindicated by the poor jobs done by Governor Adeleke.

“With this untoward development affecting the newly constructed flyover by Governor Adeleke, it is not a hyperbolic expression to conclude that all the projects carried out by the incumbent administration are grossly substandard,” the statement read.

The opposition party urged the engineering bodies to prevail on Governor Ademola Adeleke to suspend the commissioning of other roads, bridges and flyovers pending the outcome of a technical assessment of the projects in the interest of public safety.

The APC also called on stakeholders in the state to condemn what it described as the waste of public funds on the flyover in Osogbo, the state capital, and the flyovers under construction in the Oke Fia area of Osogbo and in Ile-Ife.

“It is our advice that all the bodies saddled with the responsibility of regulating construction activities in Nigeria should stop the use of these facilities and carry out a comprehensive technical assessment of all the flyovers, roads and bridges constructed by Governor Adeleke in the past three years,” the party said.
