Rivers Assembly endorses bill seeking establishment of State Police
The Rivers State House of Assembly has endorsed the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish State Police in Nigeria.
The endorsement was made on Monday, following the transmission of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, by the National Assembly to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.
The proposed amendment seeks to provide a constitutional framework for the creation and operation of State Police, amid calls for reforms to strengthen policing and security across the country.
By endorsing the bill, the Rivers lawmakers have joined other state legislatures considering the proposed constitutional alteration, which requires the approval of the requisite number of state Houses of Assembly.
The National Assembly had transmitted the bill to the state legislatures as part of the constitutional amendment process, allowing them to consider and decide on the proposal.
Recall that some state Houses of Assembly have also thrown their weight behind the creation of State Police, including those in Ogun and Nasarawa states.
