Sanusi urges supporters to maintain peace amid Emirate dispute

Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, has called on residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding his reinstatement.

Speaking during a special Iftar gathering at his palace on Sunday, Sanusi condemned those opposing his return to the throne, stating that they were challenging divine will and warning of dire consequences for anyone inciting unrest in the city.

“This matter is beyond human control; it is about God’s will, and He does not require anyone’s assistance,” Sanusi declared in Hausa, as seen in a video obtained by TheCable.

He urged patience and prayers, stating, “May fire consume anyone seeking to cause trouble in Kano. May Allah protect us and our community from all evil. Let us remain peaceful and steadfast in prayer. Whoever challenges God’s judgment will never succeed.”

Sanusi’s remarks follow a directive from Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, instructing all four emirate councils to begin preparations for the upcoming Sallah durbar, an event that marks the festive celebrations.

Meanwhile, the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has informed security agencies of his plans to hold a durbar ceremony to commemorate his fifth year as Kano’s monarch, further intensifying the dispute over the emirship.

The power struggle between Sanusi and Bayero has been ongoing for months. In May 2024, a Kano High Court barred Bayero from presenting himself as the Emir following Sanusi’s reinstatement.
