Shettima heads to New Delhi for BRICS summit

Vice President Kashim Shettima will travel to New Delhi, India, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit scheduled for this weekend.

Shettima’s participation is expected to provide Nigeria with an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations with key international partners and expand cooperation in trade, investment, energy, agriculture, solid minerals, technology and innovation.

The summit will be held at Bharat Mandapam under India’s 2026 BRICS chairmanship, with the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, on Friday, Shettima will join leaders of BRICS member and partner countries at plenary and high-level sessions during the summit.

The sessions are expected to focus on global economic growth, multilateral cooperation, political and security issues, economic and financial partnerships, as well as shared development priorities.

Shettima is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with leaders and senior officials from participating countries to explore opportunities for deeper economic and diplomatic cooperation with Nigeria.

Nigeria became a BRICS partner country in January 2025, providing the country with an additional platform to strengthen South-South cooperation and engage major emerging economies on trade, investment, development finance and reforms of global governance institutions.

The Federal Government said Nigeria’s participation aligns with Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen international economic partnerships, attract investment and expand markets for Nigerian products, particularly in agriculture, energy, minerals and other non-oil sectors.
