The Olowo dancing steps at 60 — by Dare Babarinsa

The Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, is making his 60th birthday today, July 6, 2026. Since he ascended the throne in 2019, after the eventful reign of his illustrious predecessor, Oba Folagbade Olateru Olagbegi, he has demonstrated immense capability, competence and panache.
He is a modern monarch whose provenance as a former permanent secretary in the Ondo State Civil Service has served him well. The Olowo throne is one of the most ancient in the House of Oduduwa. His palace ground is the largest in the South-West.
When l was posted to Akure in 1983 as the Chief Corresondent of the Moshood Abiola’s National Concord, Kabiyesi’s father, the phenomenal Oba Adekola Ogunoye II, who died in 1992, was on the throne. Another Owo son, Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, was the Governor. When Ogunoye III was enthroned in 2019, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, an Owo son, was also in power.
Anytime l watch the dancing steps of Kabiyesi on video clips, it reminds me so much of his outstanding father. Such rhythmic footwork could only have been made from the red soil of Owo!
Congratulations, Kabiyesi! May your reign be long and glorious!
