Tinubu declares National Sports Festival 2024 open

…says revived Sports Commission will free sector from politics

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to sports development, saying the revival of the National Sports Commission (NSC) was aimed at insulating the sector from political interference and bureaucratic delays.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the opening of the 22nd National Sports Festival (Gateway Games Ogun 2024) in Abeokuta, Tinubu said sports remain a vital force for unity, youth empowerment, and global visibility.
“We have chosen to shield it [sports] from bureaucratic interference and vested power interests,” he said. “We want it to thrive—autonomous, innovative, and focused—because we recognise its critical place in building a healthier, stronger, and more united Nigeria.”
The president noted that the NSC, inactive for nearly 10 years, has been revived to reflect the government’s serious commitment to using sports as a nation-building tool.
Describing sports as more than physical competition, Tinubu said it is “a culture, a way of life,” and a symbol of national pride and discipline.
He lauded Nigeria’s global sports achievements and praised Ogun State for hosting the games with “exceptional hospitality and organisational excellence.”
Governor Dapo Abiodun, in his remarks, emphasized the festival’s importance in showcasing the resilience and talent of Nigerian youth.
