Donald Trump’s return to global politics is reshaping power dynamics and eroding democratic norms. His authoritarian instincts, disregard for human rights, and transactional worldview are replacing principles with brute power.
From Gaza to Kyiv, Washington’s diplomacy prioritizes deals over justice, and that shift is sending dangerous signals to fragile democracies like ours as we approach the 2027 elections.
Trump’s leadership thrives on spectacle and control. He bullies institutions, glorifies “strongmen,” and treats governance as personal conquest. Around the world, leaders with authoritarian leanings are being emboldened to suppress dissent, manipulate systems, and centralize power.
In Nigeria, where democracy still balances on fragile institutions, that global mood could inspire a similar disregard for accountability and rule of law, where human rights and compassion become expendable in Trump’s foreign policy.
His support for military excesses and silence on civilian suffering normalizes impunity. For us here where state-citizen tensions already run high, such international silence weakens the moral and diplomatic checks that once discouraged abuse of power.
His hardline immigration stance also threatens Nigeria’s economic lifeline: the diaspora. Stricter visa regimes and deportations jeopardize remittances that sustain families and boost our forex reserves. A reduction in these inflows would squeeze households and heighten economic anxiety during election season.
Trump’s “America First” trade policies may further isolate Africa. If the U.S. scales back AGOA or imposes new restrictions, Nigerian exporters could suffer, shrinking non-oil revenues and jobs.
The danger for Nigeria is not direct intervention, it’s imitation. When global power rewards coercion over consensus, local politicians learn the wrong lessons.
As 2027 nears, we must protect our institutions, free speech, and the integrity of INEC. Democracy will not collapse by force but by applause for those who claim to “save” it like Trump. We must not join that chorus.
