UNFPA offers $4.5m match funds to support maternal health in Kwara

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has offered $4.5 million in matching funds to support Nigeria’s efforts to address funding gaps for contraceptives and life-saving maternal health medicines, with Kwara among the benefiting states.
UNFPA Resident Representative to Nigeria, Muriel Mafico, announced the offer on Monday when she led a delegation on a courtesy visit to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq at Ahmadu Bello House in Ilorin.
Mafico said the agency was impressed by the administration’s investments in maternal and child health, human capital development and inclusive growth, describing the progress recorded in the state as remarkable.
She specifically commended the state government for its implementation of EU-supported projects, including the engagement of more than 100 community midwives, procurement of N1 billion worth of health commodities and training of 400 health workers across the state.
The UNFPA representative also praised AbdulRazaq for his efforts to address gender-based violence and said the agency was encouraged by the governor’s commitment to initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of residents.
She said the leadership provided by the governor had made it easier for development partners to support the state, adding that leaders with clear development priorities made collaboration more effective.
In response, AbdulRazaq thanked Mafico and her delegation for the visit and the continued support of UNFPA, noting that the agency had provided technical assistance, capacity building, policy support, data development and strategic planning to strengthen government institutions and personnel.
Also, the Commissioner for Planning and Economic Development, Mary Arinde, commended UNFPA for its sustained support and assured the agency that the state government would remain efficient and transparent in implementing its programmes.
