UNGA 81: North-West governors seek global support for peace, development
Governors of the seven North-West states have called for stronger international partnerships and investment to support the region’s coordinated efforts to tackle insecurity, poverty and economic challenges.
The governors made the call at a high-level event in New York held on the margins of the 81st United Nations General Assembly and convened by the North-West Governors’ Forum in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme.
According to a report by News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN), the event brought together the governors, UN officials led by Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, development partners, international financial institutions, private-sector leaders, philanthropies and members of the diplomatic community.
The governors urged development partners to support the implementation of the North-West Peace, Security and Development Framework 2026–2030 through development finance, responsible investment and stronger international partnerships.
The framework, adopted by the seven governors in March 2026, provides a common regional strategy for addressing insecurity and vulnerability while promoting livelihoods, job creation, essential services and economic opportunities.
The seven states covered by the framework are Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara.
Participants at the New York meeting stressed that sustainable peace requires investment in the social and economic conditions that enable communities and economies to thrive.
The initiative represents a coordinated regional approach to challenges that cut across state boundaries, including insecurity, climate shocks, poverty, unemployment, displacement and limited access to essential services.
The North-West, home to more than 60 million people, plays a major role in Nigeria’s food production, domestic commerce and regional trade. The region also has significant assets in agriculture, livestock, industry, solid minerals, renewable energy and digital innovation.
