US hits Iran with ‘heavy wave’ of strikes after attempted attack on troops in Jordan
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said it carried out a “heavy wave of strikes” against Iranian military targets in response to an attempted missile attack on American troops stationed in the Middle East.
According to CENTCOM, the operation was completed at 10 p.m. ET on Thursday after Iran launched what it described as a surprise ballistic missile attack on U.S. forces in Jordan.
The command said dozens of targets linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were struck, including military command centres, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defence sites, as well as maritime capabilities.
CENTCOM said the strikes were intended to reduce threats posed by Iran and its proxy groups to U.S. forces, commercial shipping and neighbouring Gulf countries.
The military also disclosed that during the July 28 attack, IRGC forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran at U.S. forces in the region, but all the missiles were successfully intercepted.
It added that more than 50,000 U.S. service members remain deployed across the Middle East and are on high alert.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its troops discovered dozens of Hezbollah weapons hidden inside civilian infrastructure in the southern Lebanese village of Majdal Zoun, near the Israeli-Lebanon border.
According to the IDF, the recovered cache included Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition, grenades, explosives, anti-tank missiles and mortar bombs. The military also said it destroyed buildings allegedly used by Hezbollah during the operation.
Separately, Jordan’s military said its air defence systems intercepted five missiles launched from Iran overnight, with no casualties reported.
The latest incident came a day after Iran targeted U.S. troops in Jordan. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it fired ballistic missiles at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base and the headquarters of the U.S. military’s Central Command in Jordan. President Donald Trump said American forces had only minutes to respond before intercepting the incoming missiles.
