Kano to begin work on Tinubu-approved ₦1.05tn light rail project
Work is set to begin on the ₦1.05 trillion Kano Light Rail Project approved by President Bola Tinubu, with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf receiving a delegation from the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and Mota-Engil Nigeria ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony.
The delegation, led by the Managing Director of MOFI, Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang, and the Chairman of Mota-Engil Nigeria, Mr. Kola Karim, met with the governor at the Kano State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, to brief him on preparations for the commencement of the project.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, the Kano Light Rail Project is expected to transform urban transportation in Kano, improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion and stimulate economic activities across the state.
Governor Yusuf welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government to working closely with the Federal Government and the project contractors to ensure the successful execution of the rail project.
He described the initiative as a strategic investment that would strengthen Kano’s position as the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria while providing residents with a modern, safe and efficient mass transit system.
The governor also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the project, describing it as a major intervention that would benefit the people of Kano and enhance infrastructure development in the state.
Yusuf further commended the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Abubakar Kabir Bichi, for his legislative support toward the realization of the project.
