First Lady calls for unity at interfaith women’s breaking of fast

First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to embrace unity and religious tolerance, describing the coincidence of the Christian Lenten season and the Muslim Ramadan fast as a divine message for the country.

Speaking at an interfaith breaking of fast for women on Thursday in Abuja, hosted as part of both Ramadan Iftar and Lenten observances, the First Lady said the simultaneous fasting periods were a call for harmonious living among Nigerians of different faiths.

According to her, the development reflects God’s message that Nigerians should love one another and live peacefully despite religious differences.

She referenced biblical teachings, noting that Jesus Christ summarised the laws of Moses into two principles: loving God and loving one another.

Drawing from her nearly four decades of marriage to President Bola Tinubu, the First Lady said interfaith relationships could thrive with mutual respect and understanding.

She said, “Since the Ramadan fast was announced and the Lenten season began together, it was like God was speaking to us as a nation. Many things have been happening lately, and sometimes people try to frame them around religion, but most Nigerians know that is not usually the case.”

She added that her interfaith marriage had remained peaceful over the years, stressing that maturity and respect were essential for coexistence.

Senator Tinubu also challenged women, especially those whose spouses occupy public offices, to contribute positively to national development by promoting integrity and mentoring younger generations.
