My prayer is for Nigeria to succeed – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, has said he prays every day for Nigeria to overcome its growing security challenges, stressing that the country’s stability is vital for the region and Africa as a whole.

Speaking at an award ceremony in Ghana, Mahama noted that Nigeria’s insecurity could have ripple effects on neighboring countries, warning that large movements of people from Nigeria could put pressure on smaller nations like Ghana.

In his remarks on Tuesday reflecting on West African relations, Mahama emphasised the deep economic and social ties between both countries, noting that Nigeria’s performance has a direct impact on the wider region.

“If Nigeria does well, Ghana does well,” he said. “I mean, when you have cousins—250 million of them—you want them to do well so that people don’t drift towards a small country like Ghana. So every day I wake up, I pray for Nigeria. I say, God let Nigeria get their act together.”

His comments highlight the interconnected nature of West African economies, particularly between Ghana and Nigeria, where migration, trade, and shared cultural ties continue to play a major role in shaping regional cooperation.
