NCC moves to compensate users, boost network quality nationwide

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that telecom subscribers who have experienced poor network service will begin receiving compensation in the form of airtime, either today or tomorrow, Friday, April 24.
The Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, disclosed this during the inauguration of a joint committee between the Commission and a media stakeholders’ forum held in Lagos.

He explained that the decision was aimed at providing relief to subscribers who have endured prolonged poor and erratic network services, while also reinforcing the Commission’s commitment to protecting consumer rights.
Maida further revealed that efforts are being intensified to improve telecommunications infrastructure, stressing that increased investment is necessary to enhance service quality nationwide.
He noted that the availability of additional spectrum would play a crucial role in boosting service delivery by telecom operators across the country.

The NCC boss added that the engagement with the media reflects the Commission’s commitment to transparency, enabling prompt feedback on its activities and empowering consumers with relevant information.
Also speaking, the Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity, Engr. Edoyemi Ogor, lamented the persistent issue of fibre cuts, although he noted that the 1,883 cases recorded so far this year represent a decline compared to previous figures.

Ogor clarified that compensation will be provided in airtime rather than cash, based on the level of poor service experienced, while the Chairman of the Council, Mohammed Rudman, highlighted that the draft National IPv6 Implementation Strategy aims to strengthen communication networks and regulatory collaboration, even as he raised concerns over the increasing migration of skilled IT professionals abroad.
