Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has formally transferred executive responsibilities to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, after the State House of Assembly approved his request for annual leave.
The approval was granted during Thursday’s plenary after lawmakers considered a letter from the governor notifying the assembly of his planned leave in line with constitutional provisions.
According to the letter, Makinde will proceed on annual leave from Aug. 10 to Sept. 11 and is expected to resume official duties on Sept. 14, 2026.
The governor’s letter was read on the floor of the house by Deputy Speaker Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin.
Following deliberations, the lawmakers unanimously approved the request, clearing the way for Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal to serve as acting governor throughout the leave period.
The assembly expressed confidence in Lawal’s ability to oversee the affairs of the state, noting that government activities would continue without disruption during the governor’s absence.
In his letter, Makinde sought the Assembly’s approval to enable the deputy governor to act on his behalf, and the house subsequently affirmed that Lawal would oversee the day-to-day administration of the state until his return.
Deputy Speaker Fadeyi wished the governor a restful vacation and reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to maintaining a cordial relationship with the executive, while lawmakers also commended Makinde for complying with constitutional requirements by formally notifying the assembly of his leave.
