The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a former Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria in the state, Rotimi Olabiowonu, popularly known as Metilo, and another suspect over the alleged murder of a 45-year-old man, Ogunsakin Sunday.
The victim, a resident of Afao-Ekiti, was allegedly dragged from his residence and assaulted by the suspects before being thrown out of a moving vehicle during a dispute over land.
The incident reportedly occurred around 8:45pm on Monday, September 14, 2026, after Olabiowonu and about five others allegedly arrived at Sunday’s residence in a Toyota bus and took him away.
According to the police, the suspects allegedly assaulted the victim and drove him to an undisclosed location before pushing him from the moving vehicle, leaving him with serious head injuries.
The injured man was subsequently taken to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital for treatment after the suspects reportedly realised the severity of his condition, but he was pronounced dead by a doctor.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, said Olabiowonu and one of his alleged accomplices, Adedoyin Opeyemi, had been arrested following police investigation, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend others still at large.
Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case and conduct a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and prosecute anyone found culpable.
He urged residents to avoid taking the law into their hands, advising them to settle disputes, particularly land-related matters, through lawful channels and report suspicious activities to the police.
