Adebayo questions INEC’s credibility ahead 2027 elections

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has raised serious concerns over the ability and willingness of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct credible elections in 2027, warning that Nigeria may have already “lost the opportunity” for free and fair polls.

Speaking with journalists, Adebayo shifted the focus from opposition coalition-building to what he described as deep-rooted structural flaws in the electoral system.

He argued that the core issue lies in INEC’s independence and intent.

“It looks to me that there was no uproar… even those now criticising the INEC chairman were praising the appointment months ago,” he said, suggesting that current criticisms are driven more by political convenience than principle.

Adebayo traced Nigeria’s electoral challenges to missed reform opportunities, particularly the recommendations of the Justice Mohammed Uwais-led electoral reform committee, which he said were largely ignored by successive administrations.

“A lot of opportunities for free, fair and credible elections have been lost. Those who once benefited from the system are now victims of it”, said Adebayo.

The SDP chieftain said responsibility for ensuring credible elections has effectively shifted away from INEC to other stakeholders, saying “The only people left who can ensure free, fair and credible elections are the politicians themselves, the media, the voters and law enforcement. But for INEC, I think that opportunity is already gone.”

Beyond INEC, Adebayo also criticised the broader political environment, alleging that the current administration lacks commitment to democratic principles and has little incentive to strengthen electoral transparency.
