Alaafin installs new Olora of Ora, urges monarchs to remain devoted

There was widespread jubilation in Ora, a historic community in Kwara State, on Sunday as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, formally installed Oba Rodman Aremu Olawale Yekeen Sakonbari I as the new Olora of Ora amid colourful celebrations.

Major streets in the community were filled with enthusiastic well-wishers who gathered to witness the installation ceremony, while business activities were largely suspended as markets, shops and government offices remained closed for the historic event.

Ora, which forms part of Igbominaland, has long-standing historical ties with the Oyo Kingdom. Historical accounts indicate that the community was among the northern Yoruba territories that came under the influence of the Oyo Empire during its expansion from the 16th century.

The Alaafin arrived in the town accompanied by members of the Oyo Traditional Council and several traditional rulers from Igbominaland and other parts of Yorubaland. He was received by cheering residents who commended his decision to personally perform the installation rites.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Alaafin described the beaded crown as one of the most sacred symbols of Yoruba kingship, stressing that it represents royal ancestral authority, moral leadership and the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.

The monarch urged traditional rulers to uphold the values and customs associated with the crown, warning against practices capable of diminishing the dignity of Yoruba cultural institutions.

Similarly, the Alaafin also underscored the relevance of traditional institutions in contemporary society, noting that monarchs remain custodians of culture, history and communal values. He added that traditional rulers possess significant influence within their domains and can support government efforts by mobilising public backing for developmental programmes and policies.

In his acceptance remarks, the newly installed Olora of Ora pledged to dedicate himself to the service of his people and the advancement of the community. He promised to deploy his experience, integrity and knowledge toward promoting peace, unity and development in Ora, while expressing gratitude to the Alaafin for personally attending and presiding over his installation.
