Amupitan charges INEC staff on 2027 election preparedness

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has urged Electoral Officers (EOs) and Heads of Department (HODs) across the Southwest to strengthen their commitment, discipline and preparedness for the 2027 General Election.

He gave the charge on Monday in Ikeja, Lagos, at the opening of the Southwest Zonal Interaction Meeting and Readiness Assessment, the first stop in a six-zone national tour to assess INEC’s preparedness for the 2027 elections.

The meeting brought together officials from the six Southwest states to discuss operational realities and identify gaps ahead of the elections.

Declaring that “the 2027 General Election is here,” Prof. Amupitan urged officials to apply lessons from recent off-cycle elections, including those in Anambra, the FCT and Osun, to improve INEC’s processes.

He stressed that election success was determined in the field and urged officials to identify challenges and propose practical solutions.

Prof. Amupitan also commended INEC staff who participated in the recent Osun Governorship Election, saying their efforts helped protect the integrity of the ballot.

Earlier, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Lagos State, Prof. Ayobami Salami, said credible elections depended on early preparation, effective coordination, competent personnel and continuous assessment.

He urged officials to examine human resources, logistics, infrastructure, technology, materials, security and stakeholder engagement, while sharing best practices ahead of 2027.
