Beyond victory: From promise to fulfillment — by Konyin Ajayi

Now that the dust is settling, over the election of Oyinkan Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, as President of the Nigerian Bar Association, it is time to look beyond the election to the greater task of leadership.

Like many elections, this one had its glitches and moments of controversy.

Yet the outcome reflects a clear pattern of choice by members of our Association

It is now time to look beyond the contest.

This is the moment for magnanimity in victory, grace in disappointment, and unity in our common calling. It is a time for the victor to heal, reconcile and inspire; and to give the valiant runners-up, (whose campaigns enriched us), respect they deserve as leaders.

The confidence reposed in Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya, SAN gives me hope that we can look forward to a better Bar — one that serves its members more effectively, improves the living and working conditions of lawyers, especially our younger colleagues, and restores even greater pride in our noble profession.

But the challenges extend beyond the profession itself.

This is a moment to be BOLD: bold in defending the rule of law wherever it is threatened; bold in demanding accountability from those entrusted with public office; bold in championing constitutionalism, access to justice and judicial reform; and bold in ensuring that the NBA remains the conscience of our nation.

Mrs Badejo-Okusanya SAN, has made history, but history rarely remembers those who merely occupied office. It remembers those who used it to make a difference.

As such, the work begins now, for leadership is not measured by the victory won, but by the legacy built.

The President-Elect must remember she’s now a metaphor for hope for all the marginalised, those written off and those underrated: a testimony that every promise awaits fulfillment by His grace.

I wish the President-elect wisdom to discern what matters most, courage to pursue it without fear or favour, and God’s abundant grace to unite the Bar and leave it stronger than she found it.

The campaign is over. The calling has begun. The burden and privilege of leadership begin now.
