BREAKING: Obi plans independent result monitoring system for 2027 polls

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he will establish a system to independently transmit election results from polling units to his campaign’s situation room during the 2027 general elections.

Obi said the measure would ensure that results declared at polling units were accurately transmitted and prevent situations where results that did not emanate from the polling units were announced.

He spoke during a television interview with Arise Television on Thursday while discussing preparations for the 2027 elections and the need for greater transparency in the electoral process.

“All we are saying is that this time around, we will make sure that in every polling unit, we must have a system that transmits to our own situation room the correct results,” Obi said.

Reflecting on the 2023 election, the former Anambra State governor said opposition actors had taken the electoral process for granted by relying on assurances from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), adding that they would now use their own mechanisms to monitor and verify results.

Obi also advocated a simple and transparent electoral process, saying Nigeria could conduct elections similar to those in other countries, including Ghana.

He dismissed suggestions that he had refused to work with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, saying discussions on any opposition alliance should involve political parties and their structures.

He added that he could not unilaterally decide whether to step down for another candidate.
