Court remands man over alleged shop burglary in Ondo

An Akure Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded a man, Iyanuoluwa Olaniyi, in police custody over the alleged theft of goods worth one million naira from a shop in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Olaniyi was arraigned by the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps, on a two-count charge of unlawful entry and stealing.
The prosecutor, O.F. Akeredolu, told the court that the alleged offences were committed on May 13, 2026, at about 6 p.m. along Odudu Ado Road in Akure North.
According to the prosecution, the defendant unlawfully entered a shop under circumstances likely to cause a breach of peace before allegedly making away with several items belonging to one Segun Ademuluwa.
Akeredolu informed the court that the stolen items included charcoal cooking pots, a grinding machine, iron rods and generator components, all valued at one million naira. He added that the alleged offences contravened relevant provisions of the Criminal Law of Ondo State, 2006.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges while his counsel, A.F. Awala, urged the court to grant him bail, assuring that he would not jump trial and would provide credible sureties.
In his ruling, Magistrate Damilola Sekoni granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. The court directed that the sureties must provide affidavits of means, passport photographs and evidence of employment, while one of them must be a civil servant.
The magistrate also ordered the verification of the sureties’ residential addresses by court officials. However, Olaniyi was unable to meet the bail conditions and was remanded in police custody pending the perfection of his bail. The case was adjourned until June 29, 2026, for hearing.
