Critics worried over Obi–Kwankwaso political impact —Kwankwasiyya

The Kwankwasiyya Movement says growing political discussions around a possible alliance between its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former Labour Party’s Peter Obi are generating concern among some political actors because of their wider national impact.

The group said while many Nigerians have welcomed the talks as a positive step toward political unity, others have responded with criticism and opposition.

“What appears to be troubling certain interests is not merely the possibility of political cooperation, but the enormous national potential such an alliance represents,” the movement said.

It described the Obi–Kwankwaso discussions under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a development that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape by bringing together strong regional support bases from different parts of the country.

According to the movement, Kwankwaso maintains strong grassroots backing in Northern Nigeria, particularly in Kano and the Northwest, while Obi enjoys significant support among youths and urban voters in the South.

“For the first time in recent political history, Nigerians are witnessing the realistic possibility of a broad-based political understanding capable of bridging long-standing regional divides,” it added.

The group also accused some critics of applying double standards in their assessment of political alliances involving Kwankwaso, saying similar political arrangements elsewhere are often described as strategic.

It maintained that Kwankwaso’s political relevance is rooted in years of grassroots engagement and public trust rather than institutional power.
